Review – Mike Patton – From The Film and Inspired By the Book The Solitude of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi) (Ipecac)

Remember when Mike Patton was the singer for Faith No More? Was that in this lifetime, really? It seems like it was so long ago that it barely even scratches the surface when you start to talk about the career of Mike Patton. This newest audio assault comes as a self described “sonic departure release” from his more recognizable odd vocal interpretive work and fast paced time changes that his other projects (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk) are known for.
This release is inspired by a book by Italian physicist and writer Paolo Giordano, which in turn was made into a film.. in which this music was used. So, this release is a SOUNDTRACK.. it’s very much created AS a soundtrack and the pieces, although beautiful, really would probably be better suited if I had the visuals to go with it.. or perhaps had read (or even heard of) the book.
This is a very slow paced listen…I kept finding myself dozing and then would fight to become focused again. It came across as very much a soundtrack recording…presented in an almost pretentious manner, and was hard to listen to all the way through. If you are a classic soundtrack movie enthusiast, this will be for you ..it has that classic 60’s soundtrack feel to it.. If you were looking for a new release of odd experimentation with vocals by Mike Patton.. you will need to wait for the next thing.. this isn’t it. – Lob23
